What is imitation acetate fabric? How does it differ from real acetate fabric?

Imitation acetate fabric is a type of textile made from chemical fibers (such as polyester, viscose, etc.) that mimics the appearance and texture of real acetate fiber (cellulose acetate).

Key Differences:

  1. Composition:

    • Real Acetate Fabric: Sourced from natural wood pulp-derived cellulose acetate, classified as a semi-synthetic fiber.

    • Imitation Acetate Fabric: Typically a polyester-viscose blend or polyester treated to achieve an acetate-like sheen.

  2. Performance Comparison:

    • Imitation acetate is more cost-effective but less breathable and moisture-absorbent than real acetate.

    • Real acetate offers a silk-like drape and skin-friendly feel, while imitation acetate tends to generate static electricity and has a slightly stiffer texture.

  3. Environmental Impact:

    • Real acetate is partially biodegradable, whereas imitation acetate (polyester-based) is difficult to degrade.
